Upcoming Scientist Award
The PhD candidates below have been selected to present their research with a poster. During Innovation for Health the jury will select the top 10 posters who will pitch their research in 3 minutes to the audience. Subsequently the jury will select based on these pitches the winner who will receive the Upcoming Scientist Award, worth €1000, at the plenary stage.

Prof. Nico van Meeteren
Health~Holland, Director & Maastricht University Professor
Professor dr. Nico L.U. van Meeteren (Amsterdam, 1st of December 1959) currently serves as Executive Director and Secretary General of the Health~Holland, the Dutch Life Sciences and Health topsector. Van Meeteren also is a Professor of Physiotherapy, Physical Functioning with Chronic Disease, on behalf of the founders Maastricht University-Maastricht University Medical Center, Royal Dutch Physical Therapy Society and The Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO). In addition, he is Chair of the European Network on Action on Aging and Physical Activity (EUNAAPA).
Alfred Nijkerk, PharmD
CEO and founder of multiple biotech companies
Alfred holds an MSc in Pharmacy and a PharmD from Utrecht University. Starting as an Industrial Pharmacist, he founded two pharmaceutical contract manufacturing companies before founding VenGen, a hands-on investors and life sciences start-up management company, in 2001. Since then, with VenGen, he co-founded several life science ventures, amongst which UbiQ, SumiQ, FlexGen, Diagnoptics, Photonics Healthcare, ViciniVax and to-BBB.
Alfred has been CBO of to-BBB and CEO of ViciniVax. Currently, Alfred holds the position of CEO of UbiQ and subsidiary company SumiQ. UbiQ started as a spin-out of the Netherlands Cancer Institute in late 2010 and develops and commercializes ubiquitin research tools, enabling drug discovery in the ubiquitin field. SumiQ is developing mechanism-based covalent SUMOylation inhibitors, targeting non-oncogene SUMO addicted cancers.
Alain Kummer studied medicine and medical biology. After his PhD at Sanquin Amsterdam he was trained as clinical pathologist and led a research group on translational cancer research. Then he specialized in molecular pathology and personalized cancer care and was responsible for the molecular diagnostic lab at the Sint Antonius Hospital. In 2016 he finished the 2-year executive MBA at the RSM. In 2017 he was interim CEO of BISLIFE and in 2018 director scouting and medical affairs at the healthtech venture builder NLC. He is involved in selection of medtech leads in Europe and supports scientist and CEO’s of the NLC startups.
René Luigies, MA
Referentenpanel Patiëntenfederatie & BD Manager Games Health Europe
Since the foundation of the referee panel of the Patiënt federation René Luigies has been involved in judging ZonMW subsidies. The aim of this is that researchers involve patient (organisations) with the design and execution of scientific research. Also during the implementation of study results is it desirable that patient (organisations) play an active role. As independent advisor in the field of healhcare innovation René Luigies was active in an early stage of patient involvement initiatives such as "patients included" of Reshare HC and the promotion of "Blue Button" by Dave Debronkart (@epatientdave). Currently he is active in healthcare innovation as business development manager at Games Solutions Lab and Games for Health Europe. The active participation of the patient / client plays a central role in his approach for the development and implementation of serious games.
