Colja Laane graduated in biochemistry from the University of Groningen and did a PhD (cum laude) at the Wageningen University, The Netherlands, on the bioenergetics of nitrogen fixation. He received a stipendium for a postdoctoral fellowship to work in the laboratory of Nobel laureate prof. Melvin Calvin in Berkeley, USA, on artificial photosynthesis. After returning to Wageningen, where he worked on enzymatic processes in organic solvents, he joined Unilever Research Vlaardingen in 1986 to set up a new department on Bioorganic Chemistry with the aim to combine the expertise in organic- and biochemistry within Unilever worldwide. From 1990 to 1995 he was director Biosciences at Quest International, Naarden, The Netherlands. In 1995 he went back to Wageningen University as a full professor in Biochemistry. His main subjects of interest were molecular enzymology of redox enzymes and microspectroscopy in living cells. In 2000 he joined DSM as science director and corporate scientist White Biotechnology. From April 2008 till 2014 he was director of The Netherlands Genomics Initiative, which is a consortia of 20 public-private partnerships in the area of genomics with a total budget of approximately € 500 m for 5 years. From 2012-2013 he was interim director of the Life Sciences & Health Plaza of the Topsector LS&H in The Netherlands. At present he is engaged in several life sciences and industrial biotech activities. He is (co)author of over 120 papers and about 10 patents, most of which are in the area of Industrial Biotechnology. In addition he is/was member, or chairman of several (inter)national committees involved in policy development, Industrial Biotechnology, Life Sciences, and in financing and coaching startup companies.
