Jaap Goudsmit

Jaap Goudsmit is Chief Executive Officer and Chief Scientific Officer of the Crucell Vaccine Institute, Janssen Center of Excellence for Immunoprophylaxis, Johnson & Jonson and Professor of Vaccinology and Immunoprophylaxis at the Academic Medical Center (AMC) of the University of Amsterdam (UvA).

Dr Goudsmit was awarded an MD with honours in 1978 from the UvA and received a NIH fellowship to study Alzheimer’s disease. He was awarded a PhD degree from the UvA in 1982 and became a board certified Medical Microbiologist in 1983. Dr Goudsmit worked at the AMC until 2002, where he was Professor of Virology and Head of the Retrovirology department. Additionally, he chaired the AMC Research Institute of Infectious Diseases and the Institute of Science Education.

In 2002 Dr Goudsmit joined the biotech company Crucell, where he served as Chief Scientific Officer and member of the Management Board until the establishment of the Crucell Vaccine Institute in 2011. In 2017 he decided to devote his career to academic research at AMC-UvA and Harvard School of Public Health. The focus of his research is on Alzheimer's Disease.

He is the founding chair and board member of the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) and cofounder of the European AIDS Vaccine initiative with Harvard University (Cambridge, US). He is special advisor to the President of Global Health of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He collaborates in research on influenza with the Scripps Research Institute (San Diego, US) and has authored over 500 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
