Biotech breakthroughs

Professor Jos Malda is Head of Research at the Department of Orthopaedics, University Medical Center Utrecht and the Department of Equine Sciences, University of Utrecht. He also leads the Utrecht Biofabrication Facility. His research aims to develop bioprinted tissue structures as novel in vitro models and regenerative solutions. He collaborates with a range of academic and industrial partners to develop new technologies and models. A few examples are the development of perfusable models to study joint regeneration, liver performance, as well as models to study fertilization and kidney function. Dr. Malda has published over 120 articles and attracted over 9 million Euro in research funding and holds an ERC Consolidator grant.

Biofabrication in Regenerative Medicine
Biofabrication technologies provide the opportunity to further replicate native tissues at different length scales through the convergence of different fabrication approaches. We have adopted this for a range of biological models and as a regenerative medicine approach. I will discuss the latest developments in the field of Biofabrication and its opportunities in the future as regenerative treatments and as advanced in vitro models. I will also introduce the Utrecht Advanced In Vitro Models initiative, that aims to support the development, validation and transition of models to stakeholders.
