From general to personalized

Lude Franke is associate professor of systems genetics at the University Medical Center Groningen. His group focuses on the development and application of novel statistical and computational methods to very large datasets to better understand what key genes, pathways and cell-types are causally disrupted in disease. Paradoxically, he is doing this by using data from healthy individuals: by using genetic variation and integrating this with multi-omics datasets, his group can identify pathways and cell-types that play important roles in disease, some of which might the targeted pharmaceutically.

Using big-data to identify personalised drug targets
With the availability of new techniques, such as single-cell sequencing, huge amounts of data are now becoming available. But how can you reuse this previously generated data for other purposes? In this presentation I will discuss new strategies how to recycle ‘big data’ and show that by integrating different types of data it is possible to identify novel drug targets for disease that might be strongly personalised.
