Professor and chair of the ENT-department of the Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC), member of the board of the Dutch Association of Medical Specialists and chair of the councel for Science and Innovation of the Dutch Association of Medical Specialists

He studied medicine at the Erasmus University, Rotterdam and partly at the Yale University, University of Cambridge and the Université de Grenoble. Than he specialized inENT surgery at the University Medical Centre Utrecht. In recent years he has held various administrative and scientific positions.

He is a member of the board of the Dutch Association of Medical Specialists. This organisation represents all 22.000 medical specialists in the Netherlands. It guards their professional interests, initiates improvement of quality of specialist care, creates guidelines with its members, helps with training and education and science and innovation. Within the Dutch Association of Medical Specialists, he is chairman of the Science & Innovation Council, in which he is responsible, among other things, for the ‘Evaluation of Care research’. Currently he is a member of several ZonMw committees, amongst which the program committees "Quality of Care" and “translational Research”.
In science he is interested in healthcare, clinical, but also biomedical and translational research. His field of interest is Meniere’s disease. He is principal investigator of the project ‘Inner ear on-a-chip’ and primary thesis supervisor of 8 PhD students.
