Innovating with patients included

Violet Petit-Steeghs is a researcher and teacher at Athena Institute (Faculty of Science, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam). Her research is focused on the implementation of patient centred care by empowering patients and health care professionals. She leads various projects in which complex health care innovations are set up by involving all relevant stakeholders. Within the projects special attention is paid to the inclusion of vulnerable groups. These projects are funded by amongst others ZonMW, KWF and Innovatiefonds. Before her academic career, Violet obtained professional working experience within the life sciences and healthcare sector. As a project leader at Hyphen Projects she organized the first edition of Innovation for Health and as a healthcare consultant at The Decision Group she was involved in the initiatives Meetbaar Beter and Zorg voor Uitkomst.

Abstract

Patient centred innovations
Nowadays it is generally accepted that health care innovations should be meaningful and valuable to the individual patient. Health care policies and grants therefore increasingly include patient participation as a requirement. Involving patients not only improves the quality of care and the alignment with patients’ needs, it also gives patients a feeling of control. In practice, including the wishes and perspectives of patients within innovations has however not been easy. Patients are often not aware of the possibilities to use their experiential knowledge. Besides, health care professionals and policy makers often miss the expertise on how to use this experiential knowledge and create valuable participation. Would you like to improve the quality of care by using patients’ knowledge and expertise? Become inspired by the story of Dirk Jan van der Pol who combined his own ICT-expertise and his experiences as a cancer patient to be responsive to patients’ needs. And receive hands-on tools that amongst others Violet Petit-Steeghs of Athena Institute (VU) developed in collaboration with Erasmus MC to empower professionals to involve patients.
